Alicante Airport at
Environmental Management
Since opening in 1967, Alicante airport has been the gateway for much of the tourism to the Costa Blanca and the rest of its surrounding area.
The growth of the airport's infrastructure, necessary to offer quality services, must take sustainability criteria into account. This an important challenge in which environmental factors must be considered along with social and economic ones.
For this reason, in 2003 an environmental management system began to be introduced, enabling the systematic, rigorous and documented monitoring of the environmental aspects arising from airport activity. The purpose was to prevent, or at least minimise, related environmental impacts, in line with the commitments to pollution prevention and continuous improvement established in Aena Aeropuertos' environmental policy. The application of the system enables us to go beyond mere compliance with the applicable legal requirements, since its goal is to achieve better environmental performance.
The environmental management system meets the UNE- EN ISO 14001 standard and its sphere of application includes the management and maintenance of airport facilities and infrastructure, as well as the services provided by Alicante airport. It also includes the environmental monitoring of other companies working in the airport, through the procedure of Environmental control of companies. The system was certified by AENOR in September 2004.
