Respect for and conservation of the environment are among the priorities of Madrid-Barajas airport.
That is why an environmental management system, in line with Aena Aeropuertos' environmental quality policy, has been implemented to ensure that airport activity meets the requirements of the regulations for the protection of nature. As proof of this commitment, in May 2000, AENOR certified the compliance of the Madrid-Barajas environmental management system with the international ISO 14001 standard, which guarantees the protection of the environment and compliance with relevant legislation.
The management system establishes any necessary action to be taken, determines the responsibilities of each department and sets annual series of objectives aimed at reducing the impact of our company on the environment. The goals include reducing noise and gas emissions, improving water quality, preserving the ecosystems, leveraging of energy resources and improving waste treatment and recycling.
In order to involve employees, companies and users in the task of environmental protection, the airport undertakes awareness raising campaigns. An environmental control and tracking service has been created to examine facilities on a regular basis and provide advice to the companies operating in the airport grounds.
Another activity underway at Madrid-Barajas airport, thanks to Aena's environmental policy, is ensuring the awareness of its staff and of the various groups who work at or visit the airport, through the Expoambiente Area.
This Area is designed to explain the impact of the airport on its surroundings and the measures implemented to contribute to the sustainable development of air travel.
Visits to the Expoambiente Area can be arranged by request to the Administrative Offices of Madrid-Barajas airport (telephone numbers: 913 936 517/913 936 523) or Environment Department (telephone number 913 936 611)
