Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport
The electricity consumed in Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is supplied by an external electricity company via a high voltage connection. The high voltage lines reach the power plants (CELA and CELT), where in the first stage their energy is transformed to medium voltage for internal distribution. Finally, transformer plants convert it to low voltage for use in the various airport installations.
The airport also has various emergency petrol-powered generators which can supply the airport with electricity should there be a power cut.
Total electricity consumption in 2011 was 92,224.704 kWh. Per air traffic unit (UT), the value is practically the same as in 2010, although it is 78% higher than in 2009. This increase in consumption is due to the use from 2010 of the new facilities associated with the airport extension, especially Terminal T3.
Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport controls and monitors the power consumption of its facilities. In recent years several measures have been implemented to optimise resources. Here are some examples:
- Production of hot water by thermal solar energy in the two firefighters' buildings, the taxi rank and the cargo terminal.
- A system has been implemented that controls the lighting and programmes it according to date, hours of sunlight and the time of the day.
- At the gates, airbridge ramps and toilets, sensors have been installed that detect movement and only light-up when there is no sunlight. When movement stops, the lights go off.
- All the escalators and mobile bridges have motion detectors.
- Public lighting has been improved to meet the new energy efficiency regulations (RD 1890/2008).
- Halogen lamps have been replaced with fuel economy lights.
- Air conditioning prioritises the use of exterior air (Free Cooling) when the external conditions are favourable, thus reducing electricity consumption by reducing the time the air-conditioning is in operation.
- Runway and apron lighting are turned on when required by air traffic.
