In December 2004, Santander Airport received the environmental management certification ISO 14001, granted by AENOR (Spanish Association for Regulations and Certifications). This certification was granted after Santander Airport passed an audit to ensure that the environmental management system that was implemented and in use meets all requirements, in compliance with the standard UNE-EN ISO 14001.
This certificate, which is good for three years, internationally recognises and validates the efforts and actions carried out by Santander Airport in the area of environmental protection. The system that was implemented at the airport includes, among other measures, the appropriate management of dangerous waste and the adequate disposal of water coming from the sewage water treatment plant.
It also establishes control and monitoring procedures for the activities of all companies that work inside the airport, in order to minimise the presence of the airport in terms of the environment, and to ensure that all of its activities respect the current environmental regulations. Also, a "clean area" was designated at the airport to classify and store dangerous waste.
In addition, the annual programme for environmental management of Santander Airport has set a series of objectives to achieve a reduction in the use of natural resources and to recycle dangerous waste after it gets cleared.
