Consolidation
The consolidation of air transport as a key part of the tourism and economic development of the area is indicated by the growth in passenger traffic in the airport in recent years: from 6.5 million in 2001 to 9.3 million in 2010.
The vital importance of airport infrastructure in the region's tourism is reflected in the percentage of passengers from international flights, eighty percent of the total. The main countries of origin of these passengers are the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands. However, regular domestic traffic has also increased in recent years. Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca are the three most popular domestic destinations.
The opening of the New Terminal Area is intended to enhance this growth and prepare the airport facilities for the traffic forecast for 2020, estimated at around 19 million passengers.
