Atmospheric emissions

Aena Aeropuertos carries out appraisal, control, monitoring and correction of atmospheric emissions generated through its activity.

Air Quality

Aena Aeropuertos has implemented Air Quality Control Networks in Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca and Malaga-Costa del Sol airports. In some cases, Aena Aeropuertos' monitoring stations form part of municipal and/or regional Air Quality Control Networks.

Air quality control and monitoring programmes

As a consequence of the Environmental Impact Statement by the Ministry of the Environment, Rural and Marine Matters, and in accordance with its Environmental Policy, Aena Aeropuertos is carrying out air quality control and monitoring programmes around its airports.

Action

Reducing gas emissions on the ground:

  • The 400 Hz electricity supply from a system forming part of the airbridge has the advantage of making it unnecessary to use the auxiliary power unit, which as well as being a source of gas emissions, as it consumes fuel, generates noise. Although the use of this type of service is not always technically possible, Aena Aeropuertos is working with airlines to increase and extend the use of these systems throughout its network of airports.
  • To minimise gas emissions from the vehicles operating in the airport, Aena Aeropuertos uses ground support (GSE) vehicle replacement programmes on a voluntary basis and in agreement with the handling agents, to replace the most polluting vehicles with others using alternative or carbon neutral technology.

Measurement of air quality

Aena Aeropuertos provides information on the air quality of the surrounding areas of its airports through atmospheric contamination measurement systems. These systems allow us to find out the level of concentration of the main substances produced as a result of our activity, such as sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). The purpose of these stations is the automatic and continuous monitoring of air quality in the area of influence in the zones of airport operations.

Through the following links, you can access the airports where the air quality measurement stations are installed, and consult both the atmospheric emissions reports which have been carried out and the corrective measure set out to reduce the level of atmospheric contamination.
